Earliest Excavations

This is a plan of the chapel drawn during the 1924 excavation conducted by Badger and Green. The collection of numbers you see are the burials that they revealed. We believe that they excavated under the floor of the chapel, without recognising it. A small report was written, and although useful, it doesn’t actually tell us a great deal. The numbers on the plan refer to skeletons discovered.

Another excavation was carried out in the 1970s. The site was suffering from severe visitor erosion, as well as coastal erosion. During this time the coast path was moved away from the site, and the ground was restored.

Despite being of very small-scale, 3 or 4 skeletons were excavated, including one in a long cist grave. The first  two photos show the extent of the excavation carried out in the 70s, the third photo shows a cross incised stone, believed to have been used as a grave marker. The final photograph is a shot from the excavation in progress. Use the slider at the bottom of the image box below to view the sequence of photographs.
