The first burials

Wind-blown sand continued to accumulate, covering the charcoal rich layers and quartz pavement and building up around the stones of the oval enclosure and around the central feature. The first burials begin to appear. These are entirely infants, a trend that continued for some until the later 700’s AD.

Approximately 20 were initially buried, most positioned close to the central feature. Indeed, the south sides of the slate covering slabs were cut away to allow three infants, probably buried at the same time, to be buried in in the central, rectangular feature (top right and bottom right) and one infant was placed on top of the structure (bottom right). The top of the east end upright slab was chipped away to accommodate the head of this burial.
